Wed, 01 Feb 2012 16:21:58Transcript by www.newsy.com BY ZACH TOOMBS A bill put forward by Republican Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown aims to stop insider trading in Congress and the executive branch. And the proposal is finding few opponents on either side of the aisle. Brown explained the need for his bill Monday on the Senate floor. "With the bill before us today, we can take a small step to re-establishing the trust between the American people and Congress." Brown says it was a CBS 60 Minutes investigation last fall that prompted him to propose the new measure, called the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge, or STOCK, Act. "If you are a member of Congress, and you are on the Defense Committee, you are free to trade defense stock as much as you want to. If you are on the Senate Banking Committee, you can trade bank stock as much as you want. And that regularly goes on." Brown introduced the proposal two months ago, but it wasn't until President Obama highlighted Congressional insider trading in his State of the Union address that the bill gained traction. An exchange between Brown and Obama caught on camera after the speech might explain why. BROWN "The Insider Trading Bill is on Harry (Reid)'s desk right now. Tell him to get it ready. It's already there." OBAMA: "I'm going to tell him. I'm going to tell him to get it done." But the bill's effects are complicated. The use of insider information in making financial decisions is already illegal -- but laws focus on the private sector, not ... |

Mon, 30 Jan 2012 01:15:20I recently watched an ad attacking Senate Democratic hopeful Elizabeth Warren run by the Republican National Committee of Massachusetts. It was completely outrageous with shaky camera techniques just trying to make her look like an unhinged socialist radical. Scott Brown, you said yourself - you're too sexy for Super PAC campaign ads. Aren't you too sexy for this kind of partisan technique like attacking your opponent in the most despicable way - by lying about them? Tell the Mass RNC to take down their ad, and I'll take down mine. |

Sun, 29 Jan 2012 21:21:12ONLY in the mind of an elite liberal can you sit there straight faced and say you are NOT welathy when you are reportedly worth $14 Million. WOW! Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren turned a few heads after she appeared on MSNBC Thursday and declared she isn't a wealthy individual who owns a lot of stock. "I realize there are some wealthy individuals -- I'm not one of them, but some wealthy individuals who have a lot of stock portfolios," Warren said on "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell." The issue with that statement is that Warren — who's running against Republican Scott Brown — could be worth as much as $14.5 million, Buzzfeed pointed out. Financial disclosure forms show she and her husband own between $100001 and $250000 of IBM stock, and between $2.8 million and $7.9 million in TIAA-CREF funds, the Boston Globe reported. A Harvard professor, Warren earned about $700000 last year, including book royalties and consulting fees, and lives in a house worth $5 million. |

Sat, 28 Jan 2012 07:44:49Actually, I don't think that's what she's saying here but that headline is simply too sweet to resist. (That was HuffPo's original headline too before they changed it.) [www.huffingtonpost.com The quote from BuzzFeed: [www.buzzfeed.com "I realize there are some wealthy individuals -- I'm not one of them, but some wealthy individuals who have a lot of stock portfolios" she told [Lawrence O'Donnell]. Hard to see how Warren wouldn't be, by most standards, wealthy, according to the Personal Financial Disclosure form she filed to run for Senate shows that she's worth as much as $14.5 million. She earned more than $429000 from Harvard last year alone for a total of about $700000, and lives in a house worth $5 million. She also has a portfolio of investments in stocks and bonds worth as as much as $8 million, according to the form, which lists value ranges for each investment. The bulk of it is in funds managed by TIAA-CREF. Here's her financial disclosure form, [ia600805.us.archive.org which is brimming with TIAA-CREF mutual funds plus IBM stock valued somewhere between $100000 and $250000. The confusion comes when she says "I'm not one of them." It sounds like she means "I'm not wealthy," but all she actually means, I think, is "I don't have a big stock portfolio." Which is kinda sorta true: She's got a hefty mutual-fund portfolio, but shares in a fund are different from shares in a company because the investment's being managed by someone else and it's spread out among ... |
