A chilling voicemail has surfaced revealing the final words of disturbed dad Josh Powell just 20 minutes before he butchered his two sons with a hatchet and then incinerated them and himself in a gas explosion on Sunday. Although remorseful on the recording, authorities believe Powell meticulously planned the horrific murder-suicide, donating his sons' toys to charity over the weekend and sending last-minute emails to family telling them where to find his money. Investigators on Monday found two five gallon cans of gasoline inside the rubble of Powell's Graham home, along with a small ax, which cops say Powell plunged into the heads and necks of his two sons, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, before igniting the blaze. "This was definitely a deliberate, planned-out event," Pierce County Sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer said. An autopsy report showed the three died of smoke inhalation, but the chopping wounds contributed to the boys' deaths. Investigators haven't determined what specifically drove Powell to kill his sons. Friends and family have provided a portrait of a troubled soul who snapped under intense scrutiny related to his wife Susan's disappearance in 2009. A judge's decision last week to deny him custody of his children pending a psycho-sexual evaluation appears to have been the last straw, Powell's friend, John Hallewell, told ABC News. Tue, 07 Feb 2012 01:46:33This is a small axe : -410 grams -0.185" thick -bit is 4 3/16" wide -edge is 0.045" thick -bevel is 30 degrees per side -primary hollow grind Video summary : -very high edge angle + hollow primary = high chance of rippling -blade was ground flat to the primary on a belt sander (36 grit AO belt) -secondary bevel was almost removed (0.006" thick) It was later hand sharpened to a full flat profile with just a hint of the hollow remaining. The flat bevel is approximately 10-11 degrees per side (same as a Mora). Surprisingly, it took a fine shaving edge initially with no issues, I was expecting the edge to be over heated from the initial factor shaping. The haft still needs to be rounded over, it is very square, almost sharp. Once that is done I will do some light work with it, carving and shaping woods, utility and food preparation and then in resharpening thicken the final edge bevel to around 12-14 degrees per side to give it enough strength for chopping. |
